Alchemy (2023)

This sculpture is a study in material experimentation and craftsmanship, combining a welded geometric metal structure with a copper patina finish. It holds a white and gold rock surface, encrusted with a variety of handmade fictional geology and minerals, inspired by the diverse geological formations of Earth’s land and sea, as well as its flora and fauna. The piece focuses on utilizing preowned, recycled, and scrap materials, reflecting a commitment to sustainability while exploring new combinations of materials.

The materials were selected for their ability to evoke a sense of the mythical and the unknown through the exploration of fictional minerals. The copper patina offers a rich, natural finish, while the self-grown crystals, ceramics, and casted glass bring texture and depth to the composition. The use of recycled materials emphasizes a deep respect for both environmental impact and material resourcefulness.

Crafted using a variety of experimental techniques, the process includes welding, patination, plaster mold making, wax sculpting, glass casting, crystal growing, silicon mold making, resin casting, wood carving, and ceramic sculpting. The kiln bisque firing and glaze firing add to the final finish, while the carved resin and painting elements further refine the overall aesthetic.

This sculpture highlights the potential of innovative material combinations, exemplifying a hands-on approach where each material is carefully researched and manipulated to enhance form.

Materials: self-grown crystals, copper patina, ceramics, steel, casted glass, thermoplastic, recycled and scrap materials, tin, wood, resin, sand, acrylic, glass frit. Dimensions: 60cm x 65cm x 60cm
